Cunext is preparing the site in anticipation of the future construction of the new green copper plant in Córdoba

Córdoba, September 2, 2024

The new factory will produce copper with a purity of 99.99% from recovered materials through an electrolysis process.

With an investment of €130 million, it will create 80 jobs.

Following the receipt of the Integrated Environmental Authorisation in June, the company has begun clearing and preparing the land in order to start construction works in the coming months.

Following the receipt last June of the Integrated Environmental Authorisation for the production of green copper, the Cunext Group, a leading supplier in the manufacture of copper and aluminium materials for the transmission of electrical energy, data and signals, has begun preparing the land where its new factory will be built in Córdoba, with the aim of producing green copper from recycled materials.

Work is currently underway on clearing and preparing the land, preliminary tasks prior to the start of construction works, which are scheduled to begin in December of this year and are expected to be completed by the end of the first quarter of 2026.

This new plant will create around 80 jobs and will involve an investment of €130 million, complementing the €100 million investment that is being carried out in parallel at the Cunext Group’s existing facilities on Avenida de la Fábrica. This will position the city of Córdoba at the forefront in Spain in the production of low-carbon copper products, which are key for strategic industrial sectors such as the automotive industry—particularly in the manufacture of electric vehicles—the transport industry, and the electrical sector, both in conventional and renewable energy.

The new plant, which will be located on a 309,500 m² site on the Granada road, four kilometres from Córdoba, will produce Grade A copper cathodes (with a copper content of 99.99%) from recovered materials (scrap). This will make it possible to replace a significant portion of the primary copper (sourced from mining) currently used as a raw material for the production of wire rod (an intermediate product used in the manufacture of copper products).

In order to manufacture this “green copper wire rod”, a new electrolysis process will be developed and implemented, capable of producing 100,000 tonnes per year of Grade A cathodes from copper anodes sourced from recycled materials.

The company is currently awaiting a response from the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) regarding its request to include the project in the PERTE (Strategic Projects for Economic Recovery and Transformation) programme, which was submitted a few months ago. According to the Executive Chairman of CUNEXT, Dámaso Quintana, “this new plant will contribute to the decarbonisation of industry by manufacturing products to the highest quality standards and with the lowest carbon footprint on the market, while also reducing the consumption of natural resources, since copper has an infinite life cycle and, once extracted from the mine, can be recycled again and again without losing any of its properties.”
