The Regional Minister for Industry, Energy and Mines of the Junta de Andalucía, Jorge Paradela, inaugurated this morning the new photovoltaic solar plant at the Cunext Group’s facilities in Córdoba, alongside its Chairman, Dámaso Quintana, Aurora Gracia de los Ríos, Vice-Chairwoman of the Group, and José María García, Director of the Copper Business Unit.
They were also accompanied by the Government Delegate of the Junta in Córdoba, Adolfo Molina; the Territorial Delegate for Industry, Energy and Mines in the province, Agustín López; the President of the Municipal Department of Urban Planning, Miguel Ángel Torrico; and representatives of Iberdrola, the company responsible for carrying out the project. Following a brief tour of the new installation, a commemorative plaque marking the occasion was unveiled.
The installation, intended for self-consumption, has involved an investment of €6 million, covers an area of 8 hectares, and includes 13,888 panels with an installed capacity of 7.62 MWp. It will supply approximately 20% of the factory’s energy consumption in Córdoba, making it the largest photovoltaic project within Iberdrola’s Smart Solar portfolio, featuring an innovative construction method using prefabricated concrete blocks.
This plant, which will achieve a reduction of CO2 emissions of 2,500 tonnes per year, forms part of a project declared of strategic interest by the Junta de Andalucía. The Chairman of Cunext, Dámaso Quintana, emphasised that “this installation reflects the firm commitment of the Cunext Group to the decarbonisation of its production processes and to sustainable industry. It is a strategic project for us, in which we will invest around €230 million to promote sustainability and enhance competitiveness in the markets.”
The Regional Minister for Industry, Energy and Mines, Jorge Paradela, underlined the “commitment to sustainability and energy efficiency of the Cunext Group” with the commissioning of this self-consumption installation, which will cover 20% of its electricity needs, and highlighted the support provided by the Andalusian Government, through the Andalusian Energy Agency—an entity attached to his department—with a grant of €556,000 to support this installation.
Jorge Paradela also highlighted the “genuine revolution” taking place in industry in Andalusia and Cunext Copper’s commitment to producing copper wire “with the lowest carbon footprint” in Europe. In this context, the €230 million investment that the company is undertaking in its future plant is particularly significant, which will include a further 55 MW of self-consumption capacity for its energy supply. “These are projects that we firmly support from the Junta de Andalucía, contributing more than €5 million to the expansion of the Cunext factory for the installation of a new furnace and the refurbishment of two others” through the complementary incentives programme to the Regional Economic Incentives, the Minister explained.
