Planning permission has been granted for the construction of the Cunext Group’s green copper plant

Córdoba, April 23, 2025
• The Municipal Department of Urban Planning has granted the licence for the new Cunext Copper Industries factory, which will produce copper of the highest purity from recovered materials through an electrolysis process.

•As part of the Cunext Group’s strategic plan in Córdoba, worth over €200 million, this project represents an investment of €130 million, will create 80 jobs, and is scheduled to become operational in 2026, preventing the emission of one million tonnes of CO₂ into the atmosphere thanks to an innovative process.

“I would like to express our gratitude to the City Council and all the technical staff for their firm support in ensuring that this project can be carried out within the required timeframes. Their collaboration has been essential in making this new plant a reality—one that will place Córdoba at the forefront of sustainable copper product manufacturing worldwide. These products are key to the energy transition and digitalisation, in strategic industrial sectors such as automotive, transport and the electrical industry,” said Dámaso Quintana, Executive Chairman of the Cunext Group.

“At a crucial time for Europe and Spain, our project will contribute to ensuring a secure, resilient and sustainable supply of copper, promoting efficiency across the entire value chain. Moreover, it does so sustainably and with the lowest carbon footprint in the entire sector,” added Dámaso Quintana.

For his part, the Mayor of Córdoba, José María Bellido, stated that the granting of this licence forms part of the strategic approach set by the municipal government to promote “the reindustrialisation of Córdoba based on sustainable growth and development, led by projects such as this green copper plant promoted by Cunext.”

In this regard, Bellido highlighted “the tremendous importance of this project for the future development of Córdoba, as we are talking not only about a €200 million investment by the Cunext Group in this plant and the creation of 80 direct jobs in our city, but also about positioning Córdoba as a global benchmark in promoting a new, greener and more sustainable industrial model, based on cutting-edge innovation and technological processes at an international level.”

The Mayor also emphasised “the speed of administrative procedures and the efficiency of the technical staff of the Municipal Department of Urban Planning in advancing, in record time, a project of this scale and importance for Córdoba. It should be noted that the Municipal Plenary approved the Action Plan on 13 March, and today it already has the licence that will allow work to begin imminently and on schedule.”

Copper, a Strategic Resource for the EU

The construction of this new plant comes at a particularly significant time for the European Union, which has designated copper as a strategic raw material in response to the expected increase in demand over the coming decades (as the United States has also done). The use of copper is essential for technologies that underpin the energy transition, as well as for applications in key sectors such as automotive and energy. With this investment, the Cunext Group strengthens its position as one of the key operators in both the national and international markets, actively participating in the EU’s critical raw materials supply chain.
